Lesson 9

The Gawain Adventures
in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival

NOTE: As described in Ch. 6 of the synopsis of Parzival, the hero met Gawain at Arthur's court after his first visit to the Gral castle, when he failed to ask the question. The two knights ride away together at the end of the chapter, but are soon separated. Chapters 7 and 8 describe adventures of Gawain in love and chivalry, then in Ch. 9, the narrative returns to Parzival and his decisive meeting with Trevrizent. Chapter 9 is pivotal in the entrelacement, the interweaving of the Gawain adventures and the spiritual quest of the younger knight. Chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13 describe further adventures of Gawain, closely related to what Parzival learned from Trevrizent about the wounding of the Grail king.. In Ch. 14, the two heroes are reunited and the entrelacement is completed.
